Ballistic evaluation of an Australian ultra-high hardness steel

Abstract


  • The ballistic performance of an ultra-high hardness armour steel manufactured by Bisalloy Steels Pty Ltd, BIS UHH, has been evaluated for a range of thicknesses and obliquities against armour piercing (AP) and fragment simulating projectiles (FSPs). The performance of the material against AP projectiles was assessed against MIL-DTL-32332 and found to meet the Class 2 requirement for 7.62 mm APM2 projectiles and the Class 1 requirement for 12.7 mm APM2 projectiles. MIL-DTL-32332 specifies no performance requirement for FSPs.
