Evolution of stress and microstructure during gapped bead-on-plate testing of quenched and tempered steel

Abstract


  • A recent research paper by Chen et al.1 on gapped bead-onplate

    (G-BOP) testing of flux cored arc welds metal deposited

    on a high strength quenched and tempered steel demonstrated

    that the shielding gas mixture can exert a major influence on

    transverse hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC) of the weld

    metal. This paper reports complementary data on the development

    of tensile restraint stress along the weld bead and the

    evolution of microstructure on cooling, as well as the time and

    temperature dependent onset of hydrogen assisted cold cracking.
