Teaching culture in Australian Chinese Language classrooms

Abstract


  • This paper examines cultural components and the strategies used to teach culture in Australian Chinese foreign language classrooms. It argues that the explicit teaching of culture is an efficient way to enhance second language learners' awareness of cultural differences, motivate their interests in learning, and assist their mastery of lexicon and pragmatic elements. This paper provides suggestions for international Chinese language teachers and teacher educators on how to integrate the explicit teaching of culture and use of culturally embedded tasks into Chinese foreign language classrooms and the curriculum of international Chinese teacher training programs.
