Influence of aerodynamic damping on tubular tower of offshore horizontal axis wind turbines

Abstract


  • In order to analyze the influence of aerodynamic damping on the tubular tower of horizontal axis wind turbines, the element model and dynamic motion equation of offshore tower were presented firstly, then the external loads on the tubular tower and the aerodynamic damping model deriving from rotor were analyzed, the dynamic response of offshore tower to wind and wave effects were calculated. The correspongding finite element calculation program was developed to analyzed and compare the equivalent fatigue loads of wind turbine in 20 years' operation lifetime. Choosing tubular tower of 5.0 MW off shore wind turbine as an example, its power generation case operating in turbulent wind field was simulated, and the influence of aerodynamic damping on the offshore tower was also analyzed. The simulation results indicate that aerodynamic damping considerably affects the dynamic response and fatigue loads of the tower of offshore wind turbines.
