The aerodynamic characteristic of a megawatt wind turbine was calculated by applying blade element momentum(BEM) theory, integrated the Beddoes-Leishman dynamic stall modal & three-dimensional turbulent initial wind field & inertia loads & gravity load, thus the dynamic ultimate loads of the tower were obtained. According to the structure and characteristic of the tower, and applying the finite element analysis(FEA), the static (strength) and dynamic (buckling & modal)characteristics were studied for the tower of horizontal axis wind turbines(HAWTs). As an example, the ultimate loads of the tower of a MW HAWTs in different ultimate conditions, and the strength analysis of the tower were proposed. Meanwhile, taking a 1.5 MW HAWT for example, the loads of tower under different extreme situations were calculated and the strength and modal and buckling analyses of the tower were performed. The static and dynamic characteristics analysis method of tower with more practical value in engineering application were achieved.
