Overview


Dr Phil Flentje is an Engineering Geologist, currently employed as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Wollongong, Faculty of Engineering and Information Science, School of Civil Mining and Environmental Engineering.  Phil’s background is in Geomorphology, Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering. He completed his PhD at the University of Wollongong (NSW, Australia) in 1998 and a Masters in Applied Science at the University of New South Wales in 1992. Phil’s main work focus over the last 20 years has been Landslide Risk Management and all that entails in many areas throughout Australia. Practical and applied field work takes up a significant component of Phil’s time. He has developed a comprehensive GIS-based approach for regional studies concerning the occurrence, frequency and impact of landslides including rock falls, debris flows of slide type landslides. In his work he has developed models for the use of landslide inventories, the assessment of landslide susceptibility and hazard. His current activities include ongoing Landslide Inventory development, monitoring of slope deformations, pore pressures and associated structural displacements in real-time and employing web-based means of data delivery, all of which provides data to help quantitatively assess landslide frequency. His research also embraces analysis of rainfall with its spatial and temporal variability and landslide-triggering rainfall threshol!d s and associated means of providing alerts  Phil has also co-developed and co-delivers the very successful and hugely popular AGS courses Geology for Engineers in Adelaide, Engineering Geology in Wollongong and the Field Techniques for Landslide Assessment in Melbourne.
