Overview


Dr Vial graduated from University of Wollongong with a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering in May 1987. He worked for BHP Slab and Plate Products (now Blue Scope Steel) from 1981 to 1991. He completed a Masters in Telecommunications in 1997 on Congestion control in the presence of propagation delay in Frame Relay Networks. Between 1999 and 2000 he attempted a Diploma of Education specialising in High School Mathematics doing practical school placement at Warrawong and Warilla Public high schools and received his Diploma of Education in December 2000. He worked as an Associate Lecturer from 1992 to 2003. In 2004 he was promoted to Lecturer. He complete a PhD on Space Time Spreading systems applied to Ultra Wideband Time Hopping Pulse Position Modulation dual antenna / single receiver MIMO systems started under Professor Tad Wysocki (who is now at Omha in Nebraska as a full professor) in 2001 and he submitted the PhD under the supervision of Dr David Stirling and Dr Montse Ros, submitting in Feburary 2009. He graduated with a PhD on the 24th July 2009, with one of his PhD reviewers suggesting that his PhD was one of the better dissertations he had read. He now has three PhD students who he is principal supervisor working in DTN, Ad Hoc 60GHz networks and UWB channel measurements in different substances. He has lectured in electrical circuit theory, internet technology, telecommunications queuing theory, network management (SNMPv3), electronics, wireless communications, stochastic systems, and digital signal processing. He has developed various engineering laboratories in embedded internet systems, electronics, internet technology, and digital signal processing. He has supervised Masters by research students to completion on the application of wireless communications using Simulink and network management modeling applied to customer satisfaction measures using ARENA.
