Overview


Our research focuses on the development of material surfaces for biomedical and industrial applications, with an underlying theme of understanding how biological systems interact with materials. This addresses the need to better understand the effect of nanoscale structures, mechanical properties and chemistries of materials on the interactions with proteins and cell surface molecules.

This contributes to our understanding of forces in biology, particularly the molecular mechanisms by which cells recognize and adhere to surfaces. The research has wider impact across different fields by ‘bridging’ the interface between biological and materials research, including the group's current work on applications such as biomaterials, blood contact surfaces, antifouling coatings and antibacterial polymers.

In these application areas, developing the technology is critically dependent on controlling interactions at the cell-material interface, including protein adsorption and cell adhesion. To this end, we are interested in developing protocols and techniques based on single molecule and cell analysis tools to directly measure nanobio interactions with the materials under development.
