Senior lecturer in French

  • Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities

Overview

I studied French and German up to master’s level at the University of Manchester (UK), where my scholarly interests gravitated increasingly towards European literature and culture. I therefore decided to complete a Ph.D. in French and Art History (also at Manchester), focussing on the expression of desire in the early twentieth century avant-garde, particularly in surrealist art and literature. My recent book ‘Against Repression: Surrealism, Sublimation and the Recuperation of Desire’ (published 2018 by Peter Lang) draws on aspects of this research. I am currently employed as a lecturer in French at the University of Wollongong, where I have researched intersections between psychoanalysis and surrealism as well as modern French literature.

Teaching Overview

  • I underwent teacher training at the University of Wales, Bangor, where I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (equivalent of a Dip.Ed.) in the teaching of modern foreign languages (French and German). My practical training was undertaken at mixed-medium schools (at which teaching occurred in both English and Welsh). This was followed by a year spent as a teacher in secondary education in the North West of England.

While completing my doctorate I worked as a tutor of French and German at the University of Manchester (teaching courses in language, translation and business).

I arrived in Australia from the UK in February 2011, where I began the post of lecturer in French at the University of New England. There, I taught courses both online via distance education and face-to-face (in language, literature and translation). I worked as convenor of the discipline from end 2012 to 2015, though in July 2015 I took up a lectureship in French at the University of Wollongong, where I have sought to develop blended learning in the subject.
