Research Overview

  • I am an Honorary Fellow in the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts. From 2016 to 2019, I was an ARC DECRA Research Fellow in the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry.

Before joining the University of Wollongong in 2016, I was a freelance historian and editor, undertaking projects for AIATSIS, the National Archives of Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade among others. This freelance work followed more than a decade working as a writer, editor and publications manager in the Australian Public Service in Canberra.

I have been active in the field of Chinese Australian history since beginning my PhD at the University of Sydney in 1998. My PhD thesis was the first major historical study of Chinese Australian family life, and much of my subsequent work has explored the transnational connections and qiaoxiang ties of Chinese Australians in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

I have co-convened two international conferences on overseas Chinese history and heritage, and have presented my work to numerous public, community and academic audiences in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and China.

I continue to travel regularly to Hong Kong and Guangdong, having worked and studied in Zhuhai and Guangzhou in the late 1990s. I lead an annual Chinese Australian heritage tour to the qiaoxiang districts in Guangdong province.

I am @baibi on Twitter and you can find my research blog at www.chineseaustralia.org.
