Research Overview

  • Katarzyna's research centers around anti-racist pedagogy and practice in social work and other helping professions. She is passionate about ensuring that social work students and social service providers are able to effectively engage with communities across racial and cultural differences and engage in an anti-racist and social justice-oriented practice. Building on critical race theory, critical Whiteness theory, and critical multiculturalism, Katarzyna has been researching strategies to effectively teach about race, racism, and Whiteness in social work education. Some of her work has examined experiences and outcomes of U.S. students learning about the history of racial oppression while studying abroad in Ghana; racial consciousness in U.S. White students; recruitment and retention of Latino students in U.S. social work programs; and the problems with narrowly understood cultural competence model in social service provision.

Prior to joining academia, Katarzyna worked as a Polish and Spanish speaking social worker in a community mental health setting in Chicago and volunteered extensively with refugee and after school programs. She was also involved in several projects focused on community development and social work education in Ethiopia.

Katarzyna teaches social work practice courses in the Master of Social Work (Qualifying) course. She has been assisting in the development of this new postgraduate degree; it was first offered on the UOW South Western Sydney campus on Semester 2, 2018, and was subsequently delivered on the UOW main campus from Semester 1, 2019.
