Research Overview


  • Professor Barnes has taught and conducted research in the USA and the UK with publications relevant to child care issues dating back to the 1980s. Her current research interests are: evaluation of early intervention programmes related to children’s health and development and parenting; community characteristics as they relate to family functioning and children; the use and impact of child care in the early years; and the relevance of parental age for child and family outcomes. She was one of the directors of the UK National Evaluation of Sure Start and directed the formative evaluations in England of both the Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) programme and Group Family Nurse Partnership (gFNP). She recently completed a randomised controlled trial of an adaptation of FNP delivered in groups and is currently collaborating on a randomised trial of volunteer home visiting taking place across seven sites in four states in Australia.
