Overview


A/Prof. Hongtao Zhu obtained BEng in 1993, MEng in 1996, Ph.D. in 2000 from Northeastern University, P.R. China. After working in Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for two years, he joined the University of Wollongong in 2002. Now he is an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering, University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia.

His major research interests include tribology and lubrication, wheel and rail contact, fracture control, oxidation mechanics, and quantum and molecular dynamic simulation. He has a strong track record of publications, and authored/co-authored 144 refereed journals and 37 conference papers. Scopus H-index=27, citations =2442; Web of Sciences: H-index=24, citations =1937.  He has successfully supervised 15 Ph.D. completion (3 as the principal supervisor and 12 as the co-supervisor) at the University of Wollongong. Currently, he is principal supervising 5 Ph.D. and co-supervising 4 Ph.D.

He leads the research group on 'Wheel and Rail Contact System' at the University of Wollongong. The reputation of the research team is widely recognized national and international, as evidenced by continuing funding support from the Australian railway industries, including Sydney Trains, Metro Train Sydney, Australasian Centre for Rail Innovation and Comsteel, and an overseas railway wheel manufacturer. He has a strong ability to win external competitive research grants. He is the first and leading CI for 6 Industry Contract Projects with total funds of 1.922 million dollars. He has been awarded 5 ARC Discovery Projects (2nd CI, DP170103173, DP150103718, DP110104823, DP130103973 and DP0773329) and 2 ARC Linkage Projects (LP160101871, LP0991012). He is a CI for 1 ARC LIEF Project (LE0989804) and 1 ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre (IC170100006). 

He is substantially engaged with professional communities. He is an assessor for ARC, Australia; National Science Centre, Poland; and National fund for Scientific and Technological Development, Chile; Czech Science Foundation, Czech. He is an editorial board member of the Journal ‘Advances in Materials Science and Engineering’,  ‘‘Journal of Surface Engineered Materials and Advanced Technology’’ and 'Jurnal Tribologi’. Guest Journal editors for CMS, MMTB, SRI, IJMPT, IJSurfSE and Metal. He was symposium chair, CAMS 2018, and executive Conference Secretariat, AMPT 2012. 4 keynote addresses and invited talks have been delivered at international conferences. He is regularly invited to review papers for more than 20 prestigious journals.
