An analytical field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEGSEM) is an essential modern research tool for any organisation involved in high quality research and development of materials. Analytical FEGSEM has a high spatial resolution which, coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD), provides comprehensive chemical, microstructural and crystallographic information. The addition of heating and deformation testing attachments will allow observation of the microstructural evolution in-situ. The Illawarra region of NSW lacks a modern analytical FEGSEM to support a wide range of internationally competitive materials research. This application aims to correct this deficiency.
