Abstract


  • This project will develop a new generation of Oscillating Water Column (OWC) Ocean Wave Energy systems. This will be achieved by advancing our understanding of the coupling between the hydrodynamics of the wave field and the OWC, and investigating how this is affected by the OWC design, energy capture and control system characteristics. Our research will drive forward development of commercial wave energy electricity generation and seawater desalination technologies. Major outcomes include: a) new non-linear wave analyses to determine the hydrodynamic behaviour of innovative OWC configurations and optimal site location; b) novel energy conversion and control system technologies for the OWC chamber and turbine to maximise energy efficiency.
