A unified model for Streptococcus pyogenes (Streptococcus pyogenes; GAS) invasive disease initiation is under investigation. We hypothesise (1) that the human plasminogen (Plg) system plays a crucial role in GAS invasive disease and (2) that neutrophil killing of GAS at the site of infection, inadvertently selects for an invasive GAS phenotype.
