Innovation in Priority Problem Waste Management grants programme
Abstract
The major outcome of the project is to identify opportunities to reuse Ecoflex Product manufactured from End of Life vehicle tyres as a Rubber-based Energy Absorbing Layer (REAL) that can provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional capping layer consisting of compacted gravel (Fig 1). The specific outcomes are:(a) Novel technological application of REAL beneath the ballast bed to absorb a high proportion of energy transmitted to track to minimise damage (b) Performance verification of the track stabilised by REAL at high cyclic and impact loadings (Fig. 2), and(c) Changes to existing design methods by incorporating the use of Ecoflex Product manufactured from End of Life vehicle tyres, waste materials to stabilise the substructure (withstand more load and less settlement), and extend its longevity.
