Abstract


  • Continuous stratigraphic records of Quaternary climate and environmental change are available in ice-sheet and sea-floor cores but have remained elusive on land. Where long sedimentary records are available, obtaining complete uncontaminated core samples has been a serious limitation. With the advent of sonic drilling, uncontaminated sampling is now possible and is capable of providing material suitable for precise dating using newly developed methods in single-grain OSL. This proposal will marry the latest drilling technology with the rapid advances and increases sensitivity of OSL dating and other geochronological methods, and it will enable major advances in interpreting palaeoenvironmental change across the Australian continent.
