This research project is concerned with overcoming uncertainties regarding the definition of the starting point along the coast (the baseline) for measuring claims to maritime jurisdiction offshore, and consequent concerns over the location of the outer limits of maritime claims. The research also addresses problematic oceans governance and maritime security challenges in the context of intensifying ocean activities in jurisdictionally complex settings. These issues are internationally important and are particularly significant to Australia in light of its long coastline and the vast scope of its maritime jurisdiction. Research findings will assist policy makers to secure Australia¿s considerable and growing maritime interests.
