Integrative systematics of Australian flesh flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)

Grant

Scheme

  • Grant

Abstract

  • Flesh flies of the genus Sarcophaga are prominent and important components of the Australian fly fauna. Their diverse life histories provide interesting evolutionary models; when their identities and biologies are known, many carrion-breeding species can provide critical forensic data. This project will develop and integrate new diagnostic data on larval and female morphology (~30 revisions, respectively) and reproductive strategies, document new species (~15 descriptions) and complete DNA sequencing of all Sarcophaga species, greatly refining our understanding of their evolution. This project will further develop important international linkages and support training of fly biologists.
