Abstract


  • The project will develop an artificial muscle from an innovative composite material that can be used in robotics, prosthetics, medical devices (eg. catheters or drug delivery systems), compact devices (like cameras with zoom lenses), pumps, valves, locks and more. The aim is to produce for the first time a low-voltage actuator material that matches the high power and efficiency of natural muscle. The novel composite copies Nature by using an "action potential" to release a chemical fuel that directly powers the artificial muscle contraction. In addition, reinforcing fibres will be used to amplify the actuation output in the desired direction in a manner similar to the nastic movements that occur in plants.
