Abstract


  • The aim of this project is to develop detailed and sophisticated models of compact high voltage superconducting Fault Current Limiters (FCLs) suitable for integration into electricity grids. The expected outcomes of the project are 1) models to accurately describe the harmonic and force characteristics of FCLs, 2) models to describe Eddy Current losses in FCL cryogenic cooling systems, 3) Eddy Current shield designs to protect FCL superconducting coils, 4) a complete superconducting coil and cryogenic system design and 5) characterisation of a practical high voltage FCL for the Australian grid. The project builds on previous research identifying this technology as a viable solution to poor reliability in electricity grids.
