Coral Sr/Ca records from PNG and Kiribati: An eastside-westside story of past El Nino variability

Abstract

  • Our research goal is to reconstruct El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) frequency, magnitude and duration over the past 6,000 years and to derive a quantitative, spatial picture of the seasonal behaviour of ENSO. Our efforts to date have focused on reconstructing ENSO using corals from Kiritimati Island, central Pacific Ocean, however in April 2009 we expanded our research program and collected corals from Rambutso Island, PNG. We now wish to 1) date the Papua New Guinea corals, 2) conduct preliminary Sr/Ca analyses of the samples, and 3) compare the results to Sr/Ca analyses from similar-aged corals from Kiritimati.
