Abstract


  • Processes that reduce the size of plant populations, increase inbreeding and sever connections among populations are predicted to lead to extinction because populations have critically low levels of genetic diversity. This is exactly the effect of grazing on many arid zone species. We propose to trial genetic rescue of these species by supplementing levels of genetic diversity. We will first use experimental pollinations and demographic and genetic surveys to establish that populations are unable to reproduce because they lack genetic diversity and that within species patterns of genetic variation are suited to such a genetic rescue strategy.
