Abstract


  • ***LN was invited to resubmit same proposal from 2011-12 round. This version for the 2012-13 round has some modifications but is essentially the same proposal***THIS GROUP MISSION will facilitate the collaboration between an Australian (led by A/Prof Long Nghiem) and a Chinese (led by Prof Tao He) research group with complimentary expertise in process engineering and membrane fabrication, to develop a novel desalination process by integrating the use of forward osmosis (FO) and membrane distillation (MD). There is currently only one commercially available FO membrane (that is made of cellulose triacetate). Similarly, there have not been any commercially available membranes specifically designed for MD applications. Prof He¿s laboratory has successfully fabricated several types of polyamide thin film composite FO membranes with very high permeate flux and super hydrophobic micro-porous membranes ideal for MD applications. This group mission will lead to the formulation of a critical mass of high calibre researchers in engineering and materials science from Australia and China to develop a carbon neutral FO-MD desalination process.
