Abstract


  • The Earth's atmosphere is undergoing large changes in composition that not only affect climate but also have a myriad of impacts on human health, agriculture, ecosystems and the water cycle. It is of vital importance that changes in atmospheric composition are measured, understood and predictable. This requires dedication to long-term, very high quality global scale observations.The European framework 6 programme supports two major projects aimed at fulfilling this requirement. Firstly the Global Earth Observation and Monitoring (GEOMON) project aims to make precise and accurate long-term global and regional atmospheric composition observations to quantify and understand the current perturbation of the cycles of greenhouse gases, pollution and stratospheric ozone. Secondly, the infrastructure for measurement of the European Carbon Cycle (IMECC) project aims to build the infrastructure for European measurements of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane. The GEOMON and IMECC projects together proivde a unique set of high precision measurements of atmospheric composition over Europe and ensure their successful integration with satellite observations.
