The proposal's objectives are to i) collect further reef and shallow water cores from around Lord Howe Is; ii) determine whether a comparable relief reef occurs around Balls Pyramid, to the south of Lord Howe Is; iii) assess whether deeper terraces on the margins of these two volcanic edifices represent further, older marginal reefs at this important carbonate threshold. We will also examine the morphology and extent of deeper slump features on the flanks of these volcanoes and the sediments that overlie them. Dating and geochemical analysis of samples will provide insight into past sea level and climate at this critical transition.
