Abstract


  • The small heat-shock family of molecular chaperone proteins (sHsps) play a fundamental role in cells in preventing protein aggregation. Through work with national and international collaborators, this project aims to provide unprecedented insights into the links between the function and age-related malfunction of sHsps, their structures and dynamics, and the therapeutic potential of compounds that, by inducing their dissociation, act to boost their activity. A major outcome of this work will be a more complete understanding of the mechanisms by which sHsps fulfill their chaperone function and the identification of novel compounds as potential future therapeutics for protein aggregation diseases and ageing.
