Making a career out of it: the literary and cultural production of Tom Keneally

Grant

Scheme

  • Discovery Projects

Abstract

  • The project will produce an up to date critical study of Tom Keneally's fiction. It will track its placement in literary history as a process of making a literary career by examining the changing contexts in which his work is produced and received (his shifting personae as writer and public figure, fluctuating evaluations of him as 'popular', 'middlebrow' or 'serious'). The project will enhance understanding of how Australian systems of literary-cultural production operate by comparing national and overseas receptions of this major writer. In the process, it will point to a new model of writing literary history that includes the transnational circulation of national texts.
