This proposal combines novel mass spectrometry-based techniques (developed at Wollongong) with state-of-the-art instrumentation (manufactured by the Partner Organisation, AB Sciex) to provide sensitive and selective analytical capabilities for contemporary lipidomic analyses. These innovations will afford new capabilities for rapid identification and quantification of structurally related lipids (isomers) resulting in new insights into the biological diversity of lipid molecular structure. Application of these selective analytical tools will elucidate the role of lipids in human health through collaborative research in the fields of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and ocular conditions (including; cataract, presbyopia and dry eye).
