Using column CO2 observations to improve estimates of fire emissions and biosphere fluxes

Abstract


  • We propose to use an expanding set of TCCON observations to study several aspects of the terrestrial biosphere. We plan to estimate CO:CO2 emission ratios associated with Australian and Indonesian fires; sytematically evaluate the quality of GOSAT column CO2 for detecting CO2 releases from fires in different biomes and for monitoring the seasonal dynamics of CO2 associated with terrestrial ecosystem exchange; use some combination of TCCON and GOSAT observations to assess rates of vertical mixing in GEOS-Chem and to reduce uncertainties associated with the magnitude and timing of net ecosystem exchange in boreal and tropical biomes.
