Swiegers, Gerhard (Gerry) Professor

Specialist in Commercialisation and Bridging the Academia-to-Industry Gap

  • Australian Institute for Innovative Materials
  • Intelligent Polymer Research Institute

Overview

Gerhard (Gerry) F. Swiegers received a PhD in 1991 from the University of Connecticut in the USA. Following Post-Doctoral work at the Australian National University, he joined the University of Wollongong in 1995. During 1998-2009 he was a Principal Research Scientist at the CSIRO. In 2010, he returned to the University of Wollongong as a Professor, specializing in the commercialization of fundamental research and bridging the academia-to-industry gap.

Prof Swiegers is an expert in chemical catalysis and characterization. He has illuminated important fundamental aspects of catalysis and developed several chemically-based techniques that can be used to confirm the authenticity of commercial items in distribution chains. He has founded 6 spin-off companies and licensed out 3 new technologies in the last 15 years. His commercialization activities have attracted an estimated $100 million in private investment and numerous awards, including two DuPont Innovation awards. He has published 2 books, 135 scientific papers/chapters, and 51 patent families, and participated in $19 million of competitive grant funding. His inventions have found use in the pharmaceutical, apparel, casino chip, agricultural, automobile, energy and other industries.

Research Overview

  • Professor Swiegers has an active program of fundamental research that currently focuses on electrochemical catalysis and the production of hydrogen from water using renewable electricity. He also works in the fields of electrocatalytic process engineering and industrial electrochemistry. He has published widely on the interrelated properties of catalysis in natural and man-made systems, and on amplifying catalysis by thoughtful exploitation of synergistic effects with interacting supports. His book on "Bioinspiration and Biomimicry in Chemistry" (Wiley) received an American Publishers Award (Prose Award) for Professional and Scholarly Excellence. Professor Swiegers has supervised 26 PhD students and Post-Doctoral Fellows.
