Dr. Fernanda Ferreira is a Research Fellow at the University of Wollongong since September 2016. After completing a Masters in Civil Engineering (Bologna Integrated Master) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Portugal) in 2010, she obtained a PhD in Civil Engineering from the same University, in 2016, developed under a PhD grant awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
She has seven years’ experience in geotechnical research and her main areas of interest and expertise include the reinforcement and stabilisation of railway foundations and other geotechnical structures using artificial inclusions, such as rubber energy-absorbing materials and geosynthetics. She is the author of 22 technical publications in International Journals and Conferences and has actively attended several International Conferences on Geotechnical Engineering since 2011.
Her scientific contributions in the geotechnical field have been recognised and awarded over recent years. In 2013, one of her publications was selected by the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) for the “Young IGS Members Contest” which took place during the 10th International Conference on Geosynthetics in Berlin, 2014. In 2016, she was awarded an Honorable Mention from the Portuguese Geotechnical Society for an outstanding contribution presented at the “Young Geotechnical Engineers Award” session that was held during the 15th Portuguese Geotechnical Congress. Also in 2016, she received the “IGS Students Award 2013-2016” granted by the IGS during the 6th Asian Regional Conference on Geosynthetics in New Delhi. She is a Member of the Portuguese Geotechnical Society and of the IGS since 2011, and the Portuguese Representative of the Young IGS Members Committee since 2015.
