Research Overview


  • In 2019 and 2020 the video work Bicycle Race 1978, was acquired by the Pushkin Museum in Moscow (2020) and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art BACMA (2019). In 2015 Derek’s work was selected for a solo national touring exhibition funded by the Department for Communications and the Arts, Visions Australia. The tour from 2015 – 2018 under the auspice of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. The tour travelled to nine Australian galleries, a selection of work from Accident & Process was shown in Berlin in solo exhibitions (Jarvis Dooney Gallery 2017 and The Australian Embassy, Berlin 2018). The work "Littoral" 2013, was exhibited in the international touring exhibition LANDSEASKY Guangdong Museum of Art, China (2015); Contemporary Art Terminal Shanghai, China; One and J Gallery, Seoul (2014). Derek's work was also selected for the prestigious Bowness Photographic Prize at Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne (2013); On Reason And Emotion, 8th Biennale of Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2004); Adelaide Festival Biennale of Contemporary Photomedia, Art Gallery of South Australia (2004); Clemenger Contemporary Art Award, Ian Potter Centre, National Gallery of Victoria (2003); The Looking… and other outcomes, photographic series, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne (2003); Window Inside and Outside, Kwangju City Art Museum, South Korea (1999); White Pointer – you are listening to the sounds of humans observing fish, Art Gallery of New South Wales (1994); Encounters with Diversity PS1, New York 1992; The Readymade Boomerang: Sydney Biennale, Art Gallery of New South Wales 1990; 8th National Review of Live Art Third Eye Centre, Glasgow UK (1988); Vision in Disbelief, 4th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney Conservatorium of Music (1982)

    Apart from his performance art, installations and photographic works Derek has written and directed works for theatre notably sit.com, presented by the 1997 Perth International Arts Festival and Dali (co-written with David Field) toured Sydney (Stables Theatre) and Melbourne (La Mama) in 1994.
