Overview


David Officer obtained his PhD in Chemistry at Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand (NZ) in 1982. He joined the lecturing staff at Massey University (MU), NZ in 1986 after three years research work at The ANU in Canberra and as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Cologne in Germany. During his 21 years at MU, he became founding Director of the Nanomaterials Research Centre (NRC) (in 2001), the first NZ chemistry research centre devoted to the development of new materials structured at the nanoscale, and Professor in Chemistry in the Institute of Fundamental Sciences. In 2002, he became founding Principal Investigator in the NZ Centre of Excellence, the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. David was appointed to his current position of Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute and Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) in 2007 in which he led the Electromaterials Theme. He was part of the successful leadership team for ACES II (2014-2021), continuing as Electromaterials Theme Leader. In 2008, he took over the leadership of the CRC for Polymers (CRCP) Solar Cell program, was part of the team that obtained a 5 year CRCP extension in 2011, and a member of the CRCP Management Committee. David has also been responsible for the organic materials synthesis in the Materials Node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) at UoW. He has published over 220 papers and obtained 20 patents in the areas of graphene and porphyrin chemistry, conducting polymers, nanomaterials and solar cells and is currently developing commercial applications for edge functionalised graphene with a number of companies. pu
