Overview


David J. Adams is currently Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) at the University of Wollongong. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (FAHMS), the American Physiological Society (FAPS) and The Physiological Society UK (FTPS). He was previously Professor and Director of the Health Innovations Research Institute, RMIT University and an ARC Australian Professorial Fellow (2010-2015) and during the period 04/2013-02/2014 he was Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and Vice-President, RMIT University. He was Professor and Chair of Physiology at the University of Queensland (UQ), Head of Department of Physiology & Pharmacology (1997-2000), Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences (2000-2007) and Professorial Research Fellow and Director of UQ Neuroscience Program, Queensland Brain Institute (2008-2009).

Research Overview


  • Prof Adams' research focuses on membrane receptors and ion channels and is currently funded by an NHMRC Program Grant and ARC Discovery Grants (2015-2019).  He is internationally recognised for his contributions to membrane physiology, in particular that of ion channel function and modulation using electrophysiological recording techniques. In the last 20 years, he has identified novel peptides (conotoxins) obtained from the venom of cone snails as probes for ion channel structure and function. This research has focused on investigating conotoxins that selectively target the voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and G protein-coupled receptor modulation of calcium channels.
