Schoenaker, Danielle Dr

Research Fellow | Faculty of Science, Medicine & Health | School of Medicine | Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI)

Overview

Dr Danielle Schoenaker is a Research Fellow in (Clinical) Epidemiology in the School of Medicine and the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI). Dr Schoenaker has a background in Nutrition and Dietetics, and completed a masters in Nutritional and Public Health Epidemiology in the Netherlands. She was awarded her PhD in Epidemiology from The University of Queensland in 2017 examining the role of preconception dietary patterns in the development of maternal pregnancy complications.

Dr Schoenaker has a broad interest in health and medical research, with a particular emphasis on the use of longitudinal study data to inform evidence-based strategies during early life and before, during and after pregnancy for the prevention of adverse health outcomes among women and children. At the University of Wollongong, and as part of ongoing collaborations with national and international universities and institutes, her current research focusses on examining short- and long-term cardiometabolic health of women with a previous high-risk pregnancy and their children, and on developing strategies to improve women’s health as part of preconception care.

Dr Schoenaker contributes to the support and development of early career academics at the University of Wollongong through the Early Career Academics Network (ECAN) Committee, and as Co-Chair of the Communications Committee and member of the Network Committee of the Oceania Nutrition Leadership Program (ONLP).

Potential Supervision Topics

  • Dr Schoenaker’s research focusses on examining short- and long-term cardiometabolic health of women with a previous high-risk pregnancy and their children, and on developing strategies to improve women’s health as part of preconception care. Dr Schoenaker’s research uses existing national longitudinal studies among women and children, and she is currently planning new studies. Research projects can therefore include epidemiological analyses of existing data, as well as contributing to data collection.

Topics for research projects include (but are not limited to):

    • Examining cardiometabolic health of mothers with prior gestational diabetes and their children/teenagers
    • Examining the influence of in-utero and early life factors on childhood diet and lifestyle and adiposity
    • Examining associations between preconception diet and lifestyle in relation with pregnancy outcomes and subsequent maternal health
