Overview

Chris Fergusson is a geologist, with interests in structural geology, tectonics, regional geology sedimentology and oceanography. His research interests have concentrated on the geology of the Tasmanides of eastern Australia but he also has interests in the tectonics of Iran and the Nankai Trough (the subduction zone associated with southwest Japan). He has been a sedimentologist on two deep-sea drilling expeditions to the Nankai Trough (Leg 190 of the Ocean Drilling Project on the JOIDES Resolution in 2000 and Expedition 316 of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program on the D/V Chikyu in 2007/2008).

Links to recent papers include:
(1) Link to paper on the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone in western Iran.
(2) shortening in the Lachlan Orogen,
(3) provenance switching in the Tasmanides,
(4) relationships between the Ordovician Macquarie Arc and the Ordovician quartz turbidites, and
(5) Detrital zircon ages in the Broken River Province (Mossman Orogen), north Queensland.
(6) Stratigraphic and igneous relationships west of Yass, eastern Lachlan Orogen, southeastern Australia: subsurface structure related to caldera collapse?
(
7) Subduction accretion and orocline development in modern and ancient settings: implications of Japanese examples for development of the New England Orogen of eastern Australia

Research Overview

  • My research interests have concentrated on the geology of the Tasmanides of eastern Australia but have included work in the Appalachians (Newfoundland) and the Zagros Mountains of Iran. I was also a sedimentologist on 2 deep-sea drilling expeditions (2000 - Leg 190 Nankai Trough, 2007/2008 - Expedition 316 Nankai Trough).

Teaching Overview

  • Chris Fergusson has been teaching at the University of Wollongong since early 1986. He has taught from first year to postgraduate students in the earth sciences. Presently he teaches tectonics and structural geology to third year students, an introductory geology subject for civil and mining engineers and also teaches physical oceanography to marine science students.
