Gillon, Charles Dr

Honorary Research Associate

  • Postdoctoral Research Associate - Australian Centre for Culture, Environment, Society and Space (ACCESS) 2018 - 2019

I am an urban geographer passionate about addressing contemporary challenges of modern life in cities. My research portfolio to date interrogates housing challenges in Australian cities, approaching housing and home via cultural, emotional, and material geographies. I was awarded my PhD from the University of Wollongong in 2018, which examined the conflicting ideals of owner-occupation through a case study of a new housing development in Sydney.

I am currently working as a postdoctoral research associate on two projects:

  • The development of smart cities in Australia, working with Professor Robyn Dowling (University of Sydney) and Professor Pauline McGuirk (University of Wollongong) on their ARC Discovery Project 'Making Cities Smart: Emergent Geographies of Smart Urbanism' (ARC DP170103384).
  • Housing insecurity among older Australians, working with Dr Emma Power (Western Sydney University) on her DECRA Project 'Ageing, home and housing security among single, asset-poor older women'.
