Research Overview

  • I am a functional linguist with an additional background in public health. My research has mostly focused on medical discourse and register theory but I am now also using linguistic techniques to contribute to the growing field of animal studies. Across these areas I am particularly interested in how people construe and negotiate agency and identity, and how they align and disalign, in spoken, written and multimodal interaction.

I have held nationally competitive research grants (ARC, NHMRC and tenders) on subjects such as psychotherapeutic discourse, HIV medical consultation, and embodied meaning in surgical team interaction, and I have supervised research students in clinical linguistics, medical discourse, register and intonation, academic English, and literary stylistics. I am currently the Vice President of the Australian Systemic Functional Linguistics Association, and an editorial board member of the Animal Studies Journal.
