BIO
David obtained his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons) and Master of Engineering by Research (Hons) from the University of Wollongong before being employed at the University of Wollongong in 1997. In 2010, David was awarded his PhD titled “Belt Conveyor transfers: Quantifying and Modelling Mechanics of Particle Flow”. He has held several research positions and has been teaching since 2008, currently at Senior lecturer level in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. He teaches across all four years of the mechanical Engineering degree program and teaches in some of the largest compulsory engineering subjects in the faculty including; engineering computing and design and engineering fluid mechanics. For his efforts in teaching, David was awarded the Early Career Academic Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning (OCTAL) in 2011 and again nominated in 2014 and 2019.
David has published over 60 conference and journal papers in the areas of bulk materials handling and engineering education. His research interests include; analysis of belt conveyors, conveyor transfers and trajectories, calibration of particle/bulk parameters for accurate discrete element modelling (DEM) of industrial bulk materials applications and the quantification of segregation of granular and powder blends. He is also an expert advisor for Bulk Materials Engineering Australia, consulting on bulk materials handling problems and is Deputy Director of the International Solids Handling research Institute (ISHRI) at UOW.
