BIO

I lecture in Spanish in the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry. This language has been at the centre of my life since I completed a BA (Hons) majoring in Spanish. I followed this by completing a Masters in Translation and Linguistics and obtaining national qualifications in Translation from Spanish into English. My plans to commence work as a translator were happily interrupted by the offer to join the teaching team first at UNSW and subsequently at UOW, where I have been based for the last 13 years.
In 2013 I joined an ARC sponsored project to research multicultural literatures in Australia, and as a result was able to immerse myself in Spanish language creative writing as It appeared in the migrant press during the 1970s to 1990s. This opportunity led to a PhD candidature, and my thesis 'Of Cats and Dogs' 'Translating' the Migrant Experience Through 20th Century 'Crónicas' in Spanish-Language Newspapers in Australia I was awarded a doctorate in 2019.
In my current teaching practice, I continuously strive to innovate and to create a dynamic environment to maximise the learning experience for my students. My goal for 2024 is to incorporate Students As Partners projects into my teaching, and to share my experiences both within UOW and more broadly in the research community.
