BIO

Adam Trevitt is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Wollongong. His research uses lasers and mass spectrometry to capture and characterise reactive molecules, including radicals, ions and short-lived intermediates, and to establish how chemical reactions actually proceed. The work spans combustion, atmospheric and interstellar chemistry, and extends to biomedical and industrial analysis through methods for distinguishing molecular isomers. It includes the first direct observation of the gas-phase Criegee intermediate, a result now central to atmospheric chemistry. He has published more than 100 papers, including in JACS, Angewandte Chemie and Chemical Science, with sustained international collaboration across the United States, Europe and major synchrotron facilities. He has supervised a generation of PhD graduates now working in academia, industry and national laboratories, and serves on the ARC College of Experts (2024-2026).
